What Is the VDO DSRC Meter?
The VDO DSRC Meter is a short-range wireless transmitter, known as a beacon, used during the calibration of Smart Tachographs. It is a required accessory for any workshop carrying out Smart Tachograph calibrations. Without it, the DSRC test cannot be completed, and the calibration is not legally compliant.
The device simulates the checks conducted by enforcement authorities during roadside inspections. It communicates with the tachograph’s DSRC antenna, reads the transmitted data, and sends the test result directly to the WorkshopTab II via Bluetooth. The technician can monitor the result and proceed with the calibration sequence on the WorkshopTab II – no secondary device or manual data entry is required.
The DSRC Meter is battery-powered and portable. It can be set up on a tripod in front of the vehicle during testing, or mounted permanently in a fixed position in the workshop bay.
What Does the DSRC Meter Do?
Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) is the interface built into smart tachographs. It allows enforcement authorities to remotely interrogate the tachograph at the roadside – reading driver and vehicle data and records without physical access to the unit.
During calibration, workshops must verify that the DSRC interface is functioning correctly. The DSRC Meter performs this test by simulating an enforcement check: it interrogates the tachograph’s DSRC antenna exactly as an enforcement device would and returns the result to the WorkshopTab II for review and documentation.

Mounting and Positioning
The DSRC Meter must be aligned parallel to the front of the vehicle during testing. It is available in two setup configurations depending on your workshop layout.
Tripod Mount
The DSRC Meter is positioned on a tripod in front of the vehicle for each calibration. The standard supply package (part number 2910000985800) includes the tripod. Suitable for workshops where vehicle positions vary or a fixed wall mount is not practical.
Permanent Wall Mount
The DSRC Meter can be mounted permanently in a fixed position in the calibration bay. This removes the need to set up the tripod for each calibration and is well suited to workshops with a dedicated calibration lane where vehicle positioning is consistent.

Which Workshops Need the DSRC Meter?
Any NSAI-approved workshop carrying out calibrations on smart 2 tachographs requires the DSRC Meter. It is not optional — DSRC testing is a mandatory step in the calibration sequence for these tachograph generations.
Workshops that currently only service DTCO® 3.0 and below do not require the DSRC Meter. However, given the mandatory retrofit requirements now in force across European fleets, the volume of smart 2 tachograph vehicles entering service is increasing significantly. Workshops should consider this when planning equipment investment.

What happens if a workshop calibrates a Smart 2 Tachograph without a DSRC Meter?
The calibration cannot be completed in full compliance with the legal requirements under Annex 1C. DSRC interface testing is a mandatory step in the smart 2 tachograph calibration sequence. Without it, the calibration record is incomplete. This exposes both the workshop and the fleet operator to risk in the event of an NSAI audit or RSA enforcement check.
