What Is the VDO Stationary Set?

The VDO Stationary Set – also referred to as the Rollenbank Interface Module or RIM – is an interface that connects the WorkshopTab II to a rolling road, enabling tachograph calibration to be carried out entirely within the workshop. It is designed for workshops that have an existing roller brake tester or rolling road and want to use it for tachograph calibration without requiring an outdoor 20-metre lane. During calibration, the W value – the number of electrical impulses per kilometre of travel – and the L value – the effective circumference of the tyre – must both be accurately measured and programmed into the tachograph. The Stationary Set captures both measurements automatically via the rolling road, transmitting the data wirelessly to the WorkshopTab II through the Workshop Link.

The Rolling Road Calibration Process

The Stationary Set captures wheel revolution data from the rolling road and passes it to the WorkshopTab II via the Workshop Link. The WorkshopTab II then calculates the W and L values automatically as part of the standard calibration sequence.

1) Set up the reflector strip

A reflector strip is placed on the vehicle wheel. The rolling road sensor detects the strip as the wheel rotates, counting each revolution.

2) Run the vehicle on the rolling road

The vehicle is driven on the rolling road. The Stationary Set counts the KITAS impulses from the motion sensor alongside the wheel revolutions detected by the rolling road sensor.

3) Data transmitted wirelessly

The Stationary Set transmits the captured signals wirelessly to the WorkshopTab II via the Workshop Link. No manual data entry is required at this stage.

4) W and L values calculated automatically

The WorkshopTab II automatically calculates both the W value and the L value from the transmitted data. Both values are then programmed into the tachograph as part of the calibration sequence.

There are two ways to measure the W and L values required during tachograph calibration. The right approach depends on your workshop layout and existing equipment.

What is the W-value and why does it need to be measured?
A rolling road – also called a roller brake tester – is workshop equipment that allows a vehicle’s wheels to rotate in a fixed position. It is commonly used in commercial vehicle testing centres and workshops for brake testing and vehicle inspections. During tachograph calibration, the W value and L value must be measured by counting wheel rotations over a known distance. Traditionally this requires an outdoor 20-metre calibration lane. The Stationary Set allows the same measurement to be taken on the rolling road inside the workshop, removing the need for an outdoor lane and making the calibration process fully weather independent.
Not exactly – they solve the same problem using different methods. The Blue Meter is designed for outdoor 20-metre lane measurement. The Stationary Set is designed for rolling road measurement inside the workshop. Both transmit W and L values wirelessly to the WorkshopTab. If your workshop has a rolling road, the Stationary Set is the more practical option for routine calibrations. Yes, the Workshop Link is required. It is the interface device through which the Stationary Set communicates with the WorkshopTab. Without it, the Stationary Set cannot transmit data to the WorkshopTab. If your workshop already uses a WorkshopTab for tachograph calibrations, you may already have the Workshop Link in place. Contact ETS to confirm your current setup before ordering.
