The VDO KITAS Direct is a workshop tool that connects to a KITAS motion sensors during tachograph calibration. It eliminates the need for a bypass cable – the traditional method of connecting to the KITAS sensor during workshop testing and calibration procedures.

KITAS sensors are the secure motion sensors fitted to the vehicle gearbox. They communicate encrypted speed data to the tachograph. During calibration and periodic inspection, workshops must verify that the sensor is functioning correctly and read its serial number for documentation. What is a KITAS Sensor?

KITAS stands for Kontrollierter Impuls-Transmitter mit Anpassungs-Schnittstelle – a secured motion sensor used in tachograph systems. It is fitted to the vehicle gearbox and converts mechanical rotation into encrypted electrical signals, which are transmitted to the tachograph to record speed and distance data.

The encrypted signal is tamper-resistant by design. The KITAS and tachograph are registered as an authorised pair – a link between the sensor’s serial number and the tachograph unit. This pairing must be verified and documented during periodic calibration.

There are multiple generations of KITAS sensors in service across the Irish and European commercial vehicle fleet.
